The twisted, tangled trunks and branches of one of history’s most treasured trees bear witness to its tenacity and stamina. A tree so special as to be considered sacred on our island home of Sicily.
After selecting a unique piece of the dead tree I cut a section and examine the grain deciding on the best way to bring out the inherent beauty of the growth rings and scars. Each olive wood bowl is a one of a kind piece of art that honors the once beautiful and productive olive tree.
Following the natural twists and turns of the weathered tree, I try to bring into view the past struggles and triumphs of surviving hundreds of years. These beautiful olive trees are a symbol of the very essence of life.
As I work on each olive wood piece I often wonder what this tree has witnessed during its lifetime. A lifetime measured in not years but centuries.
